In which situation does Illinois allow a left turn on a steady red light?
-
A.
Only when a green left-turn arrow appears.
-
B.
From any two-way street turning onto a one-way street.
-
C.
From a one-way street onto a one-way street with traffic moving left. Correct
-
D.
Whenever there is no oncoming traffic to worry about.
The answer is "From a one-way street onto a one-way street with traffic moving left."
The only left-on-red case is turning from a one-way street onto another one-way street where traffic moves to the left, after a complete stop and a yield. B is the trap for drivers who remember a one-way street is involved but drop the requirement that the street they leave is also one-way.
The traps in the wrong answers
A. Only when a green left-turn arrow appears.
A green arrow is one way to authorize a left turn; the one-way-to-one-way exception is another. This answer assumes every left against a red needs a protected arrow to authorize it.
B. From any two-way street turning onto a one-way street.
The street you leave must also be one-way; a two-way origin does not qualify. This answer keeps the one-way part of the rule for the destination and drops it for the origin street.
D. Whenever there is no oncoming traffic to worry about.
An empty oncoming lane does not remove the red-light restriction on left turns. This answer treats absence of oncoming cars as if it lifted the red-light prohibition entirely.
