Illinois Practice Regulatory Signs

You see a red-and-white WRONG WAY sign on an expressway ramp. What is it telling you?

  1. A.
Your vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction. Correct
  2. B.
You are approaching a one-way road.
  3. C.
Traffic ahead has been rerouted temporarily.
  4. D.
The ramp is closed to all vehicles.
The Why

The answer is "Your vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction."

The WRONG WAY sign confirms your vehicle is heading against traffic; on expressways it sits a short distance past the DO NOT ENTER sign. Choice B catches drivers who reach for the familiar ONE-WAY concept and expect WRONG WAY to be its advance warning, when it actually shows up only after they have already turned into oncoming traffic.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. You are approaching a one-way road.

ONE-WAY signs mark the permitted direction of travel; WRONG WAY tells a driver they are already going against the intended direction. This answer grabs the more familiar ONE-WAY marker and treats WRONG WAY as its advance warning, missing that WRONG WAY only appears once a driver has already turned against traffic.

C. Traffic ahead has been rerouted temporarily.

Reroute notices appear on orange construction signs, not on the red-and-white WRONG WAY placard. This answer applies a construction-zone habit that unfamiliar signs on a ramp usually announce rerouting, without checking that reroute signs are orange while red-and-white is reserved for regulatory signs like STOP and WRONG WAY.

D. The ramp is closed to all vehicles.

Road-closure signs read ROAD CLOSED and do not use the WRONG WAY wording or placement. This answer treats any strongly worded red regulatory sign on a ramp as an escalation to a full closure, mixing WRONG WAY with the separate ROAD CLOSED plate used when the road is closed to all traffic.
