You see a green rectangular sign along the highway that reads "Chicago 40." What information is this type of guide sign designed to give you?
-
A.
Parks and recreation areas near the highway.
-
B.
Where you are, which way to go, and distance to destinations. Correct
-
C.
Road conditions and dangers ahead of you.
-
D.
Services along the road such as gas, food, and lodging.
The answer is "Where you are, which way to go, and distance to destinations."
Green guide signs tell drivers where they are, which way to go, and the distance to upcoming destinations. Choice D trips drivers who studied colors quickly and treat every guide sign as one bucket, so they reach for the services line that actually belongs to blue signs.
The traps in the wrong answers
A. Parks and recreation areas near the highway.
Brown guide signs mark parks and recreation, not the location and mileage that green signs handle. Both colors point drivers to places, so a reader who did not memorize each one picks whichever comes to mind.
C. Road conditions and dangers ahead of you.
Yellow warning signs report road conditions and dangers, not the destination information a green sign carries. This answer recalls that highway signs 'tell you what's ahead' and grabs a warning-sign phrase instead of the guide-sign one.
D. Services along the road such as gas, food, and lodging.
Blue guide signs cover services along the roadway; green guide signs handle location and mileage. A quick study of sign colors lumps every guide-sign hue into one and reaches for the services description first.
