Illinois Practice Construction Signs

You are driving through a highway work zone. When it is possible to do so, what does the manual require?

  1. A.
Change to a lane away from the workers. Correct
  2. B.
Turn on your hazard lights for the whole zone.
  3. C.
Move onto the paved shoulder past the work area.
  4. D.
Stop until they signal you past.
The Why

The answer is "Change to a lane away from the workers."

The manual asks you to change to a lane farther from the workers whenever a lane is available. Choice C pulls readers who translate 'move over' as move onto the shoulder, but the rule wants you in an adjacent open travel lane, not on the shoulder.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. Turn on your hazard lights for the whole zone.

The manual does not require hazard lights for the entire work zone. Borrowed the funeral-procession or slow-moving-vehicle hazard-lights habit and applied it to a work zone.

C. Move onto the paved shoulder past the work area.

The shoulder is not a travel lane; the manual wants you in an open lane away from the workers. Translated 'move over' as move to the shoulder, a phrase drivers pick up from stationary-emergency-vehicle laws.

D. Stop until they signal you past.

You stop only if a flagger signals a stop; the general work-zone rule is a lane change, not a stop. This answer treats every worker presence as a call for a full stop, a reflex carried from school-crossing rules where drivers must stop for anyone in the crosswalk.
