Illinois Practice Adverse Conditions

You are catching up to another vehicle traveling in the same direction with your bright lights on. How far behind must you be before dimming them?

  1. A.
    300 feet. Correct
  2. B.
    1,000 feet.
  3. C.
    100 feet.
  4. D.
    500 feet.
The Why

The answer is "300 feet."

The manual sets 300 feet as the dimming distance before you pass another vehicle from behind. Choice D is the oncoming-vehicle distance from the same sentence, and drivers who remember only one figure apply it to both cases.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. 1,000 feet.

1,000 feet is the visibility trigger for turning headlights on, not a bright-lights dimming distance. This answer pulls the 1,000-foot object-visibility number from the same chapter and applies it to the wrong rule.

C. 100 feet.

100 feet is not one of the dimming distances the manual sets. This answer guesses a short figure that fits an intuition about how close bright lights would need to be, without checking the number.

D. 500 feet.

500 feet is the dimming distance for an oncoming vehicle, not one you are catching up to. This answer swaps the two dimming distances printed side by side in the same sentence.
