Three-second rule

Also known as: 3-second rule, three second rule

A method for measuring following distance: when the vehicle ahead passes a fixed point, a driver should be able to count "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three" before reaching the same point. The count should be lengthened in poor weather, at higher speeds, or when following motorcycles and large trucks.
