Florida Practice Passing

You are behind three slow vehicles on a two-lane road and a long clear stretch opens ahead. What does the manual say about passing?

  1. A.
You should pass only one vehicle at a time Correct
  2. B.
You may pass all three at once while the road is clear
  3. C.
You may pass all three if the lead driver waves you around
  4. D.
You may pass all three if the lead driver flashes their headlights
The Why

The answer is "You should pass only one vehicle at a time"

Even with a long, empty stretch of road, the manual limits you to overtaking one vehicle at a time. Drivers who treat a lead-car wave-around as authorization to chain passes together pick C, borrowing an informal courtesy signal the passing rules never sanction.

Why the others miss

The traps in the wrong answers

B. You may pass all three at once while the road is clear

The manual rules out chaining passes even when the road looks open. This answer reads a long clear sight line as canceling the one-at-a-time limit, which the manual states without exception for road conditions.

C. You may pass all three if the lead driver waves you around

A hand wave is not a legal authorization to make multiple passes. This answer treats an informal lead-car wave-around as a legal go-ahead, a driver-culture courtesy gesture the Florida passing rules never mention.

D. You may pass all three if the lead driver flashes their headlights

A headlight flash from the lead driver is not part of Florida's rules for stacking passes. This answer confuses the passing driver's own nighttime headlight flash from step 4 with a signal from ahead authorizing multiple passes.
