Colorado License Suspension Rules
How this state counts violations toward suspension (points or convictions) and how DUI, reckless driving, and excessive speeding factor in.
- Suspension metric
-
points
- DUI treatment under this scheme
-
DUI is handled as a direct-action license revocation rather than as points alone. A first DUI conviction results in a nine-month revocation; a second DUI or DWAI carries a one-year revocation; a third or subsequent carries a two-year revocation. A first DWAI conviction also assesses 8 points toward suspension. Drivers under 21 face revocation on any first DUI or DWAI conviction if they fail to complete a court-ordered evaluation or program, and mandatory revocation on any second or third conviction. Refusing the chemical test triggers a separate one-year revocation plus a two-year ignition interlock requirement, added consecutively to any other suspension from the same incident.

- Reckless treatment under this scheme
-
Reckless driving in Colorado is operating a vehicle in a way that endangers people or property, intentionally or not. A reckless driving conviction can carry up to eight points against your driving record. Behaviors that may be charged as reckless include tailgating, passing on the shoulder, running a red light, swerving toward another motorist, high-speed cutting between vehicles, and similar willful acts. Severe conduct (displaying a weapon at another driver, bumping or ramming another vehicle, or high-speed pursuit) can trigger criminal charges beyond the reckless driving charge itself.
